Prime Minister Hun Manet Affirms Government's Commitment to National Security

PHNOM PENH, August 19, 2024 — Cambodia’s Prime Minister Hun Manet has commended the nation's forces and relevant authorities for their diligent efforts in upholding security, public order, and societal stability.

In a social media post on the afternoon of August 19, the Prime Minister reiterated the Royal Government's unwavering obligation to ensure peace, security, and safety for all citizens. He stressed that such measures are crucial for maintaining the routine activities of the populace and fostering the nation's prosperity, unequivocally stating that disruptions to peace and social harmony will not be tolerated.

This statement follows recent actions where the authorities detained 31 individuals linked to plans orchestrated by foreign extremist groups. The National Police spokesperson, Chhay Kim Khoeun, remarked on the evening of August 18, 2024, that the arrests were conducted professionally and in strict adherence to legal standards, ensuring that those intent on sowing discord are unable to undermine societal peace.

The detainees, including two women, were reportedly active in executing a plan intended for August 18, 2024, which involved mobilizing forces at specific targets. The police seized various items, including gasoline bottles, knives, sticks, slingshots, and bullets, which were purportedly intended for use against authorities.

The arrested individuals are currently under police custody and are set to face legal proceedings shortly.
